MAGIC, MISCHIEF, AND MAYHEM

APRIL 8,9,10,11 2010

Welcome to our April event.  Each year, I try hard to pick teachers who are versatile, full of technical knowledge, think outside of the box, constantly push themselves to create new work, and in general, are excellent teachers.

This April I am proud to say that our teachers will be Patti Culea, Cyndi Mahlstadt, and Judy Skeel.

As you must know, Patti is the head guru of doll-making and I am pleased she will be returning to Kentucky to teach at MMM.  Her class is a brand new offering – never taught before and the doll is fabulous.

Cyndi Mahlstadt has been invited to return to teach at MMM.  By a huge concensus, Cyndi was loved for both her project and her teaching skills and I am so glad to have her return.

I am also happy to welcome Judy Skeel to MMM.  Judy has supported MMM since its inception over 5 years ago, attending every time we had an event.  This year, Judy will be offering a 6 hour class, which will occur on Friday and Saturday evenings, each 3 hours long.  This class is not included in the price of the event, and will cost $35 for the 6 hours.  This is an amazing value, so please consider it when you send in your deposit or payment.

Both Patti and Cyndi will be teaching a 2 day class and then repeating it one more time.  So, the first change in MMM, you will notice, is that the classes will be 2 day classes and then repeated one time.  This will mean fewer spaces available  for MMM because I do not want to go over 20 per class. Cyndi will also offer an additional class either before or after the weekend classes.

The second change this year is a change in venue.  We are moving the event to Shelbyville, Ky, which is almost between Lexington and Louisville.  We will be at a wonderful Best Western Hotel.  The sleeping rooms are quite large, the venue is lovely, full breakfast is again included in your room rate, and I have been able to secure the same rate there as at the old hotel.  There are microwaves and fridges in some of the rooms and these rooms will be available on a first come, first served basis, so if you plan to attend, make your reservation quickly.  All hotel info will be found at the end of this newsletter.  Also, Southwest Airlines flies into the Lousiville airport.  This is great news as Southwest offers free baggage for 2 bags!

The third change is that this year you will be paying your hotel charges directly to the hotel and making your own reservations.  The room rate will be $49.95 plus taxes for a double.  The rooms are large so if you want to stay 3 or 4 to a room, you can work it out with your friends, cutting your costs even further.

You will also be responsible for your own lunches.  Shelbyville is a lovely town, with many antique shops, and good lunch places, as well as our favorite fabric and trim shop, Making Ends Meet.  For that reason we will be having a 2 hour lunch – and we are going to try to arrange a van or transportation for you to the downtown area.  If that does not come to pass, there are enough of us so that we can ride share.

We will be on our own for dinner, but usually groups of us go out, so there is no problem if someone needs a ride.

The last change and a great one, I hope you will think, is the price of the event.  Even though we will have the teachers now for 4 days instead of 3 as in the past, I am still able to cut the price by $75 from last September!  And I have another plan in mind as well.  The cost of the event will be $350 for 4 full days of classes. If I get sign-ups of 35 or more students, I will further reduce the price to $300 for the entire event.  In figuring your calculations, please remember to figure in Judy’s evening class at $35.

So – without further delay, please read the information below and drool over the pictures!  Here are the classes:

             CYNDI MAHLSTADT

Art has always been Cyndi Mahlstadt’s passion.  In High School she spent every spare moment in the Art Room with the desire of someday becoming a professional artist.  In 1995, Cyndi discovered the world of cloth dolls, which was the start of this whimsical journey.  Cyndi began by learning the basics, and then started exploring different techniques and mediums, in an effort to develop her own style.  She is continually trying new materials; she feels that experimenting is what keeps her fresh and growing as an artist.

Cyndi enjoys making fantasy figures.  Much of her inspiration comes from nature and her surroundings.  She often includes a touch of whimsy and humor in her work.  Mixed Media Figurative Sculpture is where Cyndi’s journey has brought her to today.  Sharing her art with others through teaching, galleries, selling her art and good old fashioned trunk shows are the passions that fuel this artist.

Cyndi currently resides in Redfield Iowa with her family.  Meadow Bug Studio is where she creates her imaginative, fun, and whimsical creations.

PATTI CULEA

Patti was raised on a farm in the mid-west surrounded by creative people.

After high school, Patti studied art at Biola University in the Los Angeles area. While working as a fight attendant in Phoenix and in Japan she studied under various masters. After painting portraits for several years she began experimenting with fibers. Patti retired from the airline industry in 1996 which has allowed more time to follow her artistic dream. Today, Patti combines her love of fabric and dyes by creating beautiful cloth dolls and journals. She has developed her own technique in beadwork, which many of her pieces show.  In addition to the above she has a full line of cloth doll and journal patterns.

Now here is Patti's offering for the two-day class...
