Magic, Mischief, and Mayhem: September 2009

When: September 11, 12, and 13.  Plan to arrive on the 10th

Where:  Best Western Holiday Plaza, Richmond, Ky.

Who’s teaching?  Pam Grose from Australia

                              Allison Marano from the U.S.

                              Arley Berryhill from the U.S.

How does it work?  Each teacher teaches the same one day class on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.  The students rotate so that they get a class from each teacher!  In other words, each attendee gets a class from each teacher.

You will be asked to join our yahoo group where files for supply lists and any other important information can be obtained.

The package price includes the 3 full classes, 3 nights at the hotel (double occupancy), 3 full breakfasts, and 3 lunches.  The hotel rooms are equipped with microwaves and refrigerators.  The hotel also offers a workout room, and an indoor pool, and complimentary computer access.

There are many good dinner places and we usually go in groups out to eat.  There is a Hobby Lobby and a Walmart very close in case anyone needs any supplies.

This year, because of travel restrictions, none of the classes require sewing machines to be brought to the event.  That means there may be some pre-class work to do, but it is a great trade-off.

The all –inclusive cost for the 3 days is $425. Unfortunately we have seen increases in both the hotel and food areas, but while the price has increased, it is still considerably lower than other venues where you must pay your own hotel costs.  If you want to stay an extra night (that is, arrive on Thursday and stay through Sunday night), there will be an additional $60 charge per room per night.  If you are sharing a room, that would mean an additional $30 per occupant.  If you require a private room throughout the entire conference, your MMM fee will be $600 for everything including 4 nights. If you plan to stay for 4 nights or if you need a private room, please contact me, so I can note it.

There is a $50 non-refundable deposit required upon signing up for the event.  I need your name, phone number, address, and email address (this is very important as I need it for the yahoo group invitations).  If you do not need a payment plan, the next deposit of $150 will be due Feb. 1, 2009.  Following that, the third payment of $150 will be due March 15, 2009.  The final payment of $75 will be due on June 1, 2009.  If you would like a payment plan, please contact me privately.  Of course, if you want, you may pay the entire amount in a lump sum.

You may write a check, pay with cash, or send a money order. I do not take credit cards anymore and I cannot take PayPal for this event. Thank you for your understanding. There will be no refunds after March 15, 2009 due to the international travel costs. All hotel room reservations will be made for you and if you have room  requests, please let me know.

If you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to email me at: anniedolls@roadrunner.com or give me a phone call at: 859-623-2455.

 GWENDOLYN

Gwendolyn is a 15” muslin/cotton stump doll attached to a wood base for extra support. The body/torso construction and assembly is basic and easy. The face is lightly needlesculpted and colored with pencils and chalks. Fingers are individually wired.

Gwendolyn’s dress and train are created using heat distressed chiffon or georgette, and her bodice is made from machine-stitched felt that is also distressed and then painted.

The focus of the workshop will be to create and apply the costuming elements which are hand stitched to the assembled body and heat distressed right on the doll. This technique is not nearly as risky as it sounds, and is quite successful providing you follow the steps and take a few precautions which will be demonstrated in class.

Additional costuming elements include hand embroidery on the wrapped sleeves, and a machine stitched lacy cap (from a pattern), that is wet-formed and painted.

There will be a pattern and detailed instructions for all the pre-class work.

Pre-class work will include: sewing and stuffing all body parts, attaching stump to base, needlesculpting the face with simple sculpting stitches, machine stitching a piece of felt for the bodice, and stitching the lace cap.

Done in class: coloring the pre-sculpted face, assembly of remaining body parts, creating and applying the costume, and heat distressing the various costume elements.

Arley Berryhill

Arley is an incredibly gifted artist with a background in theater and costuming. His pieces reflect his love of textiles, jewels, and color. Arley is a very sought after artist and the tricks of the trade that you will learn from him will enhance your own doll making skills. We are so lucky to be sharing Arley’s ideas and secrets at this year’s MMM.  Arley isn't doing much traveling and teaching anymore, so this is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Arley will also be offering a more in depth class just before the MMM weekend begins. This class will be very limited in size and will be held in my home studio. The class is Lady Peacock and will have several other costuming options. The cost is $130, or $65 per day, and will take place Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept 8 and 9. Thursday, Sept 10 will be our move into the hotel and set-up, so would be a great time to visit Berea, an arts community just 12 miles away, or to  rest up for the weekend. We can take only 12 participants, so please let me know asap.

                                                                              AURORA OF THE MIST:

A WOODLAND SPRITE

Aurora has a constructed wire armature that is shaped into position.  Her body is then formed using layers of pellon (batting) to create the bulk and figure.

Aurora’s face is muslin with a lycra overlay and the hands are wire frames created when the armature is made, and then covered with batting and lycra gloves.

There is no need for sewing machines as the head and hands will be sewn as preclass work.

The face and hands will be painted and then stretch velvet will be used to create a body suit.  After that step, you can embellish to your heart’s desire.

Pam’s Midweek Classes

Pam will be teaching 2 one day classes.  These will occur immediately after the weekend on Monday, Sept. 14, and Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2009 .  Each class fee is $65.00.

Mannequin Figure

On Monday, the 14th, Pam will teach us how to create a lovely mannequin.  You will be sent a pattern ahead of time and will need to complete it prior to class.  In class we will be dressing the dummy, creating wings and jewelry, and learning embellishment techniques.  Pam will demo many techniques.  The basic character of the mannequin is that of a fairy, but there will also be a period costume lesson is someone does not want to do a fairy costume.

Pole Dolls

On Tuesday, the 15th, Pam will teach us how to create one of her new “Pole Dolls”.  In this class, the focus will be on the face painting.
